    Book details

he Wind Rises is Miyazaki's love letter to the power of flight and the imagination, an examination of the rise of Japan's military might in the years leading up to the Second World War, and a call for worldwide peace and harmony in the face of destruction. This book captures the art of the film, from conception to production, and features in-depth interviews with the filmmakers.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. In 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Starting Point: 1979-1996, a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that chronicle his early career and the development of his theories of animation. Both are published in English by VIZ Media.

Unlike other books in the Studio Ghibli art series this one contains very little in the way of concept art. Other than that a good mix of background art and film stills are presented. The books gives a good representation of the film, and the full English script is contained in the back. However, what made this book stand out for me is the extent to which the text clarifies the research done by the team to ensure the period (and technology of the period) were depicted as accurately as possible. All the airplanes, locomotives, trains, ships etc. really existed (well, except for the airplane flown by Jiro in his dream in the opening scenes). Most Anime studios would draw "a locomotive". Not Ghibli, they draw a Bavarian S3/6, or a Japanese Class 9600 steam locomotive!

A beautifully presented hardback book that would make an ideal present for anyone who has seen and fallen in love with The Wind Rises or equally it would make an interesting coffee table book and conversation piece. It contains copious notes by Hayao Miyazaki concerning the design decisions and his vision of how the story develops. There are many original watercolours of how the scenes were imagined and how they turned out was well as the many stages of designing the main characters of the piece. As a hobbyist sketch artist this is a treasured volume and has helped me enormously in developing my style by studying the imagery and the accompanying notes. You can’t go wrong where Miyazaki is concerned his visual story telling is among the best I have come across and his artwork is enthralling.

Bought this for gf since she's a big fan of Studio Ghibli. Had a skim through it and still saw enough beautiful pieces of traditional work put into the movie. It's a must buy for anyone that loves Miyazaki's work.
